The game 9 Letters challenges players to maximize their vocabulary skills by forming words from a single nine-letter jumble. The game presents a randomized nine-letter word, and the objective is to identify the original nine-letter word as well as additional words of three to eight letters.

Several modes of play accommodate different preferences. Normal mode requires players to use all nine letters to create as many words as possible. Target mode adds a layer of difficulty by designating one letter as the target, requiring that every submitted word include this letter, thus narrowing the search scope but increasing the challenge.

Players can also opt for time-restricted sessions by enabling a 30-second limit per word, adding a timed dimension to the game. The database supporting the game encompasses over 100,000 words ranging from three to nine letters, including some terms that even seasoned lexicographers may not know.

The interface is intuitive: tapping on letter tiles adds them to your current word, tapping again removes them, and dragging reorders them while swiping left clears all selections. All previously found words are conveniently listed for review, ensuring players can avoid duplicates or revisit their discoveries. If unsure about a word’s validity, attempting it again prompts the game to confirm its correctness.

Enhanced features include a "highlight" function that visually indicates valid words as you form them, significantly speeding up gameplay and aiding vocabulary uncovering. Additionally, automatic detection of ’s’ endings can be enabled to identify related plural forms, which are then added automatically to your word list. When applicable, disabling plurals can make the game more challenging.

For a stricter test of skill, players can activate a minimum four-letter word filter, excluding shorter terms from consideration. Customization options allow users to modify background colors via a dedicated color picker, enhancing visual comfort.

Auditory cues further assist gameplay by providing sound feedback during interactions, enabling more engaging and quicker responses without solely relying on visual cues.

For users running iOS 8 or later devices, the Handoff feature enables seamless continuation of games across multiple devices—perfect for switching from an iPhone to an iPad without losing momentum during commutes or breaks.

The scoring system rewards players based on their ability to find words within certain percentage benchmarks. Each nine-letter word achievement grants bonus points, and continuous play is possible indefinitely when the time limit is disabled. The game’s core appeal lies in its puzzle-solving aspect, encouraging incremental progress at your own pace.

Hints are accessible after every ten words discovered and can be purchased with in-game currency during gameplay. Purchased hints are immediately consumed and cannot be saved for later use, emphasizing strategic decision-making during each session.
